Ronda Monahan is a highly experienced Registered Social Worker with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers, bringing over 35 years of clinical experience in mental health and addiction. She has developed a recognized specialization in working with first responders, supporting individuals impacted by operational stress injuries, cumulative trauma, and the psychological demands of high-risk professions.
Ronda began her academic journey at McMaster University, where she completed her undergraduate studies in Social Work and Sociology. She earned her Master of Social Work from McGill University, building a strong foundation in advanced clinical practice. Ronda has completed extensive postgraduate training in Marriage and Family Therapy, Addiction and Mental Health, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Ego State Interventions (including Internal Family Systems–informed approaches), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), and Clinical Hypnosis. Her clinical work is further informed by attachment-based and trauma-focused interventions, as well as Polyvagal Theory, which allow her to integrate mind-body approaches to support nervous system regulation and trauma recovery—particularly relevant in her work with first responders.
Over her career, Ronda has developed a broad and diverse clinical background. She has worked in child welfare, hospital-based Adult Outpatient Psychiatry (providing crisis intervention), and within the justice system, supporting individuals managing addiction and mental health concerns in both institutional and community settings. This breadth of experience has strengthened her ability to support first responders and other high-risk professionals navigating complex systems and high-stress environments.
In addition to her clinical work, Ronda has made significant contributions to education and professional development. She has taught in Mental Health and Addiction programs for over 25 years. For the past 10 years, she has been teaching in the Social Work program at Trent University, where she integrates practical clinical expertise with academic instruction. She has also provided clinical supervision to fellow practitioners and developed resources to support social work students and emerging clinicians.
Ronda has worked extensively as an Addiction and Mental Health Clinician within community agencies, supporting individuals, couples, and families across a wide range of concerns, including trauma, substance use, concurrent disorders, grief, anger management, self-esteem, interpersonal conflict, and life transitions. A significant portion of her practice includes working with first responders and frontline professionals, offering both individual and group-based interventions tailored to the unique culture and demands of these roles.
Her clinical approach is trauma-informed, client-centred, and grounded in an anti-oppressive framework. Ronda integrates a range of evidence-based modalities to meet the unique needs of each client, including Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Narrative Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, Interpersonal Therapy, Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), attachment-focused EMDR, Ego State Interventions, Internal Family Systems (IFS), and Clinical Hypnosis.
Ronda Monahan is respected for her depth of experience, compassionate presence, and integrative approach to care. Her commitment to supporting first responders, individuals, and families continues to guide her work in fostering resilience, recovery, and meaningful change.
